Legislation and loading of black powder weapons
Black powder weapons are intended for collectors, amateurs of antique weapons or shooters who wish to equip themselves with an authentic firearm. They are replicas of antique models that can be used, loaded and cleaned as in the old days.
Black powder weapons legislation
In France, handguns and long guns with black powder are classified in category D. They are therefore on sale over the counter for those over 18 years of age. At the time of purchase, it is sufficient to present a valid identity document.
Unlike pellet guns, there is no ready-made ammunition to load them. Loading them is quite time-consuming since it is impossible to prepare the ammunition in advance.
In some countries, the legislation is stricter, as in Italy, where they are classified as category B and a prefectural authorisation for detention is compulsory.
Loading
Most black powder weapons are equipped with the primer percussion system. Invented in the 1820s, this firing system is economical, easy to install and use. To load a revolver, pistol, rifle or carbine, you need :
• insert the black powder,
• then the felt wadding,
• hen the bullet,
• then the primer into the barrel,
• then squeeze the trigger.
When the trigger is pulled, the hammer of the weapon crashes into the primer, which is composed of flammable material. A flame arises and spreads to the powder via a chimney (circular duct). A detonation resounds and the bullet is thrown out of the barrel.
The felt wadding is used to ensure a tight seal between the bullet and the powder.
