The creation of the Umarex brand
The history of Umarex began in 1972 in North Rhine-Westphalia. In the same year the German government enacts a new firearms law: from now on, a permit will be required to buy a deadly weapon. At that time, the manufacturer Umarex was still called Mayer & Riem and produced only one blank gun: the Perfecta Model G1. Following the adoption of this new law, more and more Germans became interested in blank guns. Mayer & Riem followed suit and decided to give customers what they wanted. The manufacturer expands its range and offers alarm pistols, shotguns and pellet rifles. Success is there and crosses borders.
The expansion of Umarex
Very quickly, the manufacturer exported its products to France, Egypt, Austria, Italy and Switzerland. In 1985, it strengthened its international presence by creating Umarex Austria. The subsidiary develops the sales of weapons for hunters and sport shooters in the countries of south-eastern Europe. In 1993, the company is acquired and renamed Umarex.
